Peer Mentors are
male students from local colleges and universities who co-facilitate
classes for teen males with Family Life Council Wise Guys Educators.
To prepare, peer mentors receive 15 hours of training in the areas
of self-esteem, clarifying values, goal setting, decision-making,
male responsibility, sexuality, healthy relationships, communicating
effectively, and fatherhood. Upon completion of the above training,
to which is added observation and practical training experience,
they are ready to co-facilitate a Wise Guys training session.
The purpose of adding Peer Mentors to the Wise Guys Program is
simple. Adolescent males look up to older adolescent and young adult
males. Providing role models who provide a positive influence for
abstinent behavior, show respect for women, and exhibit positive
characteristics has proven to be a successful component of the Wise
Guys program, as well as other programs around the country.
Strong leadership abilities and effective oral communication skills
are required of peer mentors. They also must understand the
importance of fatherhood, showing respect to women, and sexual
responsibility.
