Program Overview
MULTI-SESSION:
A flexible 5 to 12 week program for 11-17 year old males that relates responsibility and teen pregnancy prevention to self-esteem, values, healthy relationships, human sexuality, decision-making, and goal setting. Multi-session programs are available in most area middle schools and some high schools.
SINGLE SESSION:
Wise Guys offers schools and community agencies presentations on a variety of topics ranging from self-esteem and responsibility to dating violence and healthy relationships.
PARENT EDUCATION:
Wise Guys staff and community volunteers offer two Parent Sexuality Education sessions, “Talking With Adolescents About Sexuality” (for parents of teenagers) and “Talking With Children About Sexuality” (for parents of younger children). These sessions focus on developing positive and effective family communication about sexuality and values.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING:
The Wise Guys staff offers extensive training in replicating the Wise Guys program. One or two-day trainings are available and include: an in-depth discussion on theories and research about adolescent male development; demonstrations on techniques that have been proven effective in educating young males on sexual responsibility; and practice in using the Wise Guys curriculum. Wise Guys educators are also available for workshop presentations and keynote addresses on related topics.

In an effort to diversify and reach others in the community the Wise Guys program and curriculum has been translated into Spanish. Cultural issues are also discussed from the Latino male perspective. Program delivery is also available in Spanish. Classes are taught in several local middle and high schools.
PEER MENTORING:
The Wise Guys staff offers training sessions in the Fall and Spring for male college students to help facilitate classes in schools and community sites. Males who attend trainings are also able to educate their peers on men’s health issues, manhood, and responsible sexual behavior.
WISE GUYS: THE NEXT LEVEL:
This recent addition to the Wise Guys Program is a flexible 5 to 12 week program that specifically targets men age 18 and older. Special topics that are addressed include: stress and anger management, cohabitation and marriage, alcohol and other drugs, and an expanded fatherhood curriculum that provides information and resources for fathers from RAD, the Responsible and Active Dads program. The great information from the original Wise Guys program is also included in such a way as to suit its older audience. |
